Is Your Ability To Perform Based On a Piece of Paper?

The Black Dollar Cipher Blog Topics April 5, 2017

How soon we forget or were made to forget the embedded skills and trades that dwelled within us naturally. Once upon a time, not so long ago, we called on those with the “know how” and didn’t think twice about rather or not they possess the certifications or the mandated degrees within that field. Nope, we let the word of mouth guide us to these pillars of the community and they simply let their work speak for itself.

Michael, who stayed two doors down, knew everything there was to know about repairing a car. Not only was his work thorough but he didn’t charge you a arm and a leg to have the work done. Even though he had the “know how” without state certifications you would find this same A1 mechanic working for the local auto repair shop employed to repair tires…What a waste of natural skills subject to the bureaucracy of the states mandated red tape.

How could something like this happen, you may ask? We see so many fall victim to having their hands tied on their natural ability to show and prove from failure to attain the certification. Maybe school was not an option straight away. Sometimes delays are prolonged by life’s other obligations. Maybe the lack of financial stability was a factor. Or maybe, just maybe it was just too big of a pill to swallow knowing that he would have to sit down and be taught something he already knew by those that he felt knew alot less.

We see this happen so much in our communities. The “know how” is there.  Maybe the drive and finances aren’t there to make this a “certified” reality. I say we stand behind those shinning beacons within our community. Let’s think on pooling our resources to send them to school, even if it’s only one every five years for trade certification only. We have to find ways to empower those who power us but in the meantime, continue to take your car to Mr. Mike from two doors down.

MARCUS GARVEY…. His Work and Economical Ideals

The Black Dollar Cipher Blog Topics March 11, 2017

Marcus Garvey (1887-1940), born in Jamaica, became a leader in the black nationalist movement by applying the economic ideas of Pan-Africanists to the immense resources available in urban centers. After arriving in New York in 1916, he founded the Negro World newspaper, an international shipping company called Black Star Line and the Negro Factories Corporation. During the 1920s, his Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) was the largest secular organization in African-American history. Indicted for mail fraud by the U.S. Justice Department in 1923, he spent two years in prison before being deported to Jamaica, and later died in London.

Garvey aimed to organize blacks everywhere but achieved his greatest impact in the United States, where he tapped into and enhanced the growing black aspirations for justice, wealth, and a sense of community. During  World War  I and the 1920s, his Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA) was the largest black secular organization in African-American history. Possibly a million men and women from the United States, the Caribbean, and Africa belonged to it.

Garvey came to New York in 1916 and concluded that the growing black communities in northern cities could provide the wealth and unity to end both imperialism in Africa and discrimination in the United States. He combined the economic nationalist ideas of Booker T. Washington and Pan-Africanists with the political possibilities and urban style of men and women living outside of plantation and colonial societies. Garvey’s ideas gestated amid the social upheavals, anticolonial movements, and revolutions of World War I, which demonstrated the power of popular mobilization to change entrenched structures of power.

Garvey’s goals were modern and urban. He sought to end imperialist rule and create modern societies in Africa, not, as his critics charged, to transport blacks ‘back to Africa.’ He knitted black communities on three continents with his newspaper the Negro World and in 1919 formed the Black Star Line, an international shipping company to provide transportation and encourage trade among the black businesses of Africa and the Americas. In the same year, he founded the Negro Factories Corporation to establish such businesses. In 1920 he presided over the first of several international conventions of the UNIA. Garvey sought to channel the new black militancy into one organization that could overcome class and national divisions.

Although local UNIA chapters provided many social and economic benefits for their members, Garvey’s main efforts failed: the Black Star Line suspended operations in 1922 and the other enterprises fared no better. Garvey’s ambition and determination to lead inevitably collided with associates and black leaders in other organizations. His verbal talent and flair for the dramatic attracted thousands, but his faltering projects only augmented ideological and personality conflicts. In the end, he could neither unite blacks nor accumulate enough power to significantly alter the societies the unia functioned in.

Finally, the Justice Department, animated by J. Edgar Hoover’s Federal Bureau of Investigation and sensing his growing weakness, indicted Garvey for mail fraud. He was convicted in 1923, imprisoned in 1925, and deported to Jamaica in 1927. Unable to resurrect the unia, he moved to London, where he died in 1940.

Living In Constant Financial Fight or Flight

The Black Dollar Cipher Blog Topics March 2, 2017

Money is not the root of all evil, the unfair distribution of wealth is the root from which evil has sprung. There are people who live lavish lifestyles off of the sweat and tears of others while those who are shedding sweat and tears are barley making ends meet. We can have a huge debate on who the true and living heirs to the wealth of land are, but I’ll leave that for a later date and time. This is a case of the have’s and the have not’s……No, not the have not’s of Ma’at, but let’s take a look at the state of existences when truth, justice, and equality doesn’t come into play.

Cruising through my city from one end of the spectrum of existence to the other, it was plain to see the effects of living in lack versus living in abundance. I witnessed folks starting their morning off playing golf, playing tennis, having brunch at their favorite bistros, carrying their puppies like newborn babies  showing absolutely no stress or pressure of having to report to work at a set time for peanuts for the sake of their livelihood. “This is the life!” …one might say.

Down the expressway, under the overpass, across the tracks there was another state of existence coming into view. I observed folks standing at the stop waiting for the city bus to arrive. I witnessed mothers pushing their babies in strollers while walking their children to school. I witnessed women in maid uniforms speed walking double time towards the historic hotel where they are employed. I witnessed bumper to bumper traffic with a side dish of road rage. I noticed that from one area of the city to the other not only did the smooth structure of the streets change, so did the atmosphere.

The contrast of the state of existence are very different , to say the least. I observed one group of folks eating, drinking, or just being merry while only a hop and a skip away there were folks living in a constant state of fight or flight. There were those with paying bills constantly on their mind robing them of their peace, then there were those with dollar bills for fine wine all the time. Living a life of luxury and peace with what would seem like “Not a care in the world.”

In the end, I can not say that all the “Have’s” didn’t deserve what they have or the lifestyle it affords them; nor can I say that the “Have not’s’ deserve the life of constant stress and worry of financial matters. I just feel that the playing field is unbalanced. Just a day in the life of taking my daughter, who is dressed in her uniform, to work in the historic part of town.

Do Not Buy Where You Will Not Be Hired

The Black Dollar Cipher Blog Topics February 27, 2017

Out of convenience we become patrons, patrons of establishments that have set up shop in our neighborhoods. Foreigners come to this country and establish tax free businesses in our neighborhood solely to capitalize off of the “black spending power”.  The Chinese set up takeout restaurants, the Koreans set up beauty supply stores, and the Arabs set up convenient stores but how often do you see one of your race employed by these establishments?  It’ll be a cold day in hell before they hire you yet your money is always welcomed.

Because of the convenient strategic location we find it easier and less time consuming to just run around the corner or up the street to purchase goods and services. Upon entering their establishment you are watched as if you already stole something, so in their minds, you becoming employed with them is totally out of the question. They will allow their barely out of grade school child to work their business before the will consider hiring you.

With little to no possibility of being employed by these businesses we still find ourselves turning over our hard earned currency to them. Is it the lack of black businesses or is it the lack of knowledge of the importance of supporting black businesses? Whatever the case, we need to evaluate ourselves. Make it your business to seek out black owned businesses and throw your weight behind them. Betterstill, become a black business owner in your neighborhood and employ your own.

Let’s get started at The Black Dollar Cipher where we can buy, sell, and promote among ourselves so that the black dollar may continue to circulate within our community.

Don’t Be A Hoarder Turn Your Packed Away Items Into Profit.

The Black Dollar Cipher Blog Topics February 26, 2017

I’ll be the first to admit that I have cherished items that I can’t see myself parting with. Most of these items were given to me as gifts, so to me they harness tremendous sentimental value . How can I part with my high school prom dress or my dusty crate of records? You see, It wasn’t until I decided to pack up and move back home that I came face to face with how much unnecessary items I have collected over the years. To myself…”Woe!” Woe sista, evaluate yourself! Most of this stuff won’t fit into the location you are relocating to.

So what’s the solution? How about check out www.theblackdollarcipher.com. A new classified ads site dedicated to encouraging the “black dollar” to circulate within the community. It’s FREE to list or you can select the $10.00 to feature option. Good Deal!!! Wow…keeping it in house without actually keeping it in my house..ha. Perfect. Mama always said “You can’t expect to receive anything if you never release what you have an abundance of.” So I’ll release, then I’ll search the site for items that I may be in the market for……oh goodness…The cycle continues…

Re-membering Black Wall Street

The Black Dollar Cipher Blog Topics February 25, 2017

Remembering Black Wall Street, the era in which the black dollar circulated 36 to 1000 times, sometimes taking a year for currency to leave the community. Today, a dollar leaves the black community in 15 minutes. As far as resources, there were Ph.D’s residing in Little Africa, Black attorneys and doctors. There were pawn shops everywhere, brothels, jewelry stores, 21 churches, 21 restaurants and two movie theaters. It was a time when the entire state of Oklahoma had only two airports, yet six blacks owned their own planes. The area encompassed over 600 businesses and 36 square blocks with a population of 15,000 African Americans.

When the lower-economic Europeans looked over and saw what the Black community created, many of them were jealous. When the average student went to school on Black Wallstreet, he wore a suit and tie because of the morals and respect they were taught at a young age. A lot of global business was conducted by the black community centered from “The Black Wall Street”. The community flourished from the early 1900s until June 1, 1921. That’s when the largest massacre of non-military Americans in the history of this country took place, and it was lead by the Ku Klux Klan which cause total financial devastation.

Fast forward to the here and now of the year 2017, I ask are we any closer to realizing the resurrection of Our Black Wall Street? How do we get back to seeing our dollar circulate 36 to a thousand times over before it leaves our community? Here at www.theblackdollarcipher.com we believe the power is in the pooling of our resources, group economics, and buying, selling, and trading among ourselves. Man can do what man has done. The blueprint was laid a long time ago, we must wake up and realize the power of our collective pockets.
